World of Self Defense - Combat Jujitsu: what do users think?

Daniel Ayd: at another Minnesota-based gym after deciding I needed a change. I arrived only 5 minutes before class, sorry, but Steve welcomed me with open arms and the place was filled with the sounds of the students having fun talking before starting. Steve had a great relationship with the students and commanded their attention with minimal effort. Light stretches to start, followed by increasingly intense partner bag work blending kicks and punches. Then came technique which today was some sit through escapes from bottom. Class finished three rounds of rolling and then everyone seemed to be welcome to hang out and talk, stretch, or even keep rolling. Steve invited me at this time to roll with him which I love to see. An owner engaged and willing to roll with all students! He was patient but forceful and made me tap a half dozen times before he had had enough! The diversity of the students is great, many women present and a great age range so anybody should feel welcome. No snobbery here with uniform rules and a focus on fun while learning a very real and practical version of jiu jitsu. Nothing fancy but a tremendous value thanks to building ownership offering the lowest tuition rates in town. Truly a unique and historic school! Thank you again for letting me join you!

Killa_JJ420: Awesome place to get some exercise while learning self defense.

Jeremy Wolff: Great school!

Daniel: First school I ever trained with and can say that it was an awesome experience! Steve is a wonderful instructor and wants you to succeed!

Tony Garfield: what I learned here has not only saved my life, but also made it better. forever in debt and honor.

Ryan Blazei: Steve is great with the kids.

Eric Homan: Fantastic instructor, his teaching gives reality and competition variations. Oldest jujitsu school in MN.

austin wills: , very reasonable fees, and I would recommend to any one. Steve teaches adults and children.

Armando Gutierrez: Southside Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy is one of the best schools in Minneapolis! Coach Enrique and his instructors are incredibly welcoming, creating a fun and exciting atmosphere for the gym. On top of that, their wide-range of techniques and detailed instruction offers one to learn and advance very fast once here! It is clear that they truly have a passion for teaching from how they conduct themselves and deal with everyone around them. Southside Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy is definitely the most premier school in terms of technique, training, and atmosphere. When you're talking about this gym, you're talking about the Gold Standard of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gyms!

Fabian Ferrada: I’ve had an opportunity to train in a lot of dojos over the last 16 years and Southland BJJ definitely has a great environment and culture. Felt safe with everyone and had an opportunity to train with some of the colored belts. Very respectful and overall great people. Highly recommend if you’re in the area and looking to drop in for a class.

Nicole Santolalla: Southside is an outstanding bjj academy. Everyone is very welcoming and Coaches are extremley knowledgable and focus on helping each student with their individual needs. It is a great place for anyone regardless of if you are new to the sport or have tons of experience. I would 100% recommend giving it a try.

Odhran Hayes Owens: Southside is a wonderful community of jujitsu practitioners. The professors meet the students where they are at and have real grasp on how to teach the techniques for the students. I’ve practiced a variety of martial arts at a few places, their approach to jujitsu seems to be pretty progressive and very well thought out

Eben gardner: Great gym! He's very flexible with what you need and everyone is very friendly. There's a wide range of skill at this gym so it's a great place for anyone looking to continue or start their training. If you can't afford the rates, talk to him about it. He'll work with ya! Good luck!

Mark Hill: I did a drop in class while in town for a day at this gym. The instructor was welcoming, as were the students. He clearly has immense knowledge of Bjj and taught really well and I learned a lot from his class and his students who were equally helpful! Will be back for sure next time I am in Minneapolis. Great gym.

Kareem Abou-Karam: What an amazing place to train! It doesn't matter if you are just starting or you have been training for years, the instruction at Southside is top-notch! I have been training here for the past 2 years and have learned more than I could have possibly imagined in that time!

Yi Jin Toh: but all the other sessions are also very welcoming and made me feel comfortable

Joseph Dasuki: Authentic people, chill vibes, tough competitors 🤙, everything that matters for a great bjj gym is here

Fatima A: This is an excellent Jiu jitsu gym, I highly recommend it to other parents. My son attended and received stellar training. He was new to the sport and timid, and I always felt he was in the best of hands, both cared for and always challenged to get even better. The instructors are skilled, patient, and provide the kids with plenty of opportunity to learn and practice together. The membership is very competitive and location is convenient. We had nothing but great experiences here, no reservations at all.

Ibsa Barisa: Joining Southside Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy has been a transformative experience for me. Professor Enrique, the head instructor, is not only an outstanding tactician but also a highly skilled. His passion for the art is contagious, and under his watchful eye, I have learned the importance of perfecting my techniques and embracing the values of discipline, resilience, and respect. What sets Professor Enrique apart is his ability to break down complex moves into digestible steps tailored to each student's level. He has always been open to my questions and provides detailed responses that have deepened my understanding of Jiu-Jitsu. His unwavering commitment to my progress has made me feel competent in my skills and confident in my ability to apply them during rolls and future competitions. In addition to Professor Enrique, other instructors, like Professor Adrian Ricci, and higher belt students like Nik and Tim have been incredibly helpful and encouraging. Their collective expertise creates a well-rounded learning experience that fosters growth and development. The gym itself is clean and well-maintained, and I've found a supportive and motivated community in my fellow practitioners. Southside Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy flexible scheduling with classes in the morning, midday, and evenings, has made it easy for me to fit training into my busy life. I can't imagine a better environment to learn and grow in the art of Jiu-Jitsu, and I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to train under Professor Enrique and the rest of the talented team.

Joe & Dorota Kearney: I dropped in for a class while I was in town for work. It’s a great atmosphere with high level black belt instruction, and everyone was very welcoming and friendly. I will certainly return when I’m back in town!

Maxamed Hussin: This is a great place to train! The crew at Southside bjj are very welcoming to visitors and cater to all levels of grappling experience.

Krav Maga Minneapolis LLC: what do users think?

Trevor Barsamian: Located on the lower level now

World Martial Arts Center: what do users think?

Stephen Tannen: Our family cannot recommend WMAC enough. The Sa Bo Nyms are firm, fair AND fun. The gender diversity is the highest of any dojang Ive visited in 30 years. Students can learn TKD, Hapkido or Kung Fu. It’s been a wonderful for our kiddos self esteem. Me? OEF USASOC Veteran and former Ranger.

Robert Ribciuc: Great program to instill self confidence, values and a growth mindset. Good mix of male and female students sends a good message that self defense and fitness are everyone’s business and further builds up confidence. Parking occasionally requires resourcefulness but there are additional paid lots and street parking nearby.

Jason Bain: I recently attended a trial for World Martial Arts Song Moo Kwan Hapkido Program. I have been a Hapkido student for several years and was very impressed with this program. First off I must say this is the most beautiful well thought out Martial Arts facility that I have ever been to.The school has a rich history and the Instructor Master Pat Carey is excellent and knowledgeable in both Hapkido and Taekwondo. The entire organization is very courteous and welcoming both students and Instructors. It can be difficult to find a Dojang teaching true and pure Hapkido that is not hybridized with Taekwondo but the school does a great job of keeping the two arts separate. I highly recommend anyone interested in an Excellent traditional Martial Arts program give World Martial Arts a try.

Thomas McDermott: I arrived at the The World Martial Arts Center with high expectations and yet somehow it has managed to exceed all of them. Here you will get World-Class instruction from individuals with decades of experience in martial arts. It is without a doubt the premier martial arts facility in the state of Minnesota. The World Martial Arts Center also has incredible history. Its Grandmaster Hee Sang Ro is an 9th Dan Black Belt in Taekwondo and is the son of the founder of Taekwondo, Byung Jick Ro.Whatever reason you have for being interested in martial arts, whether it be self-defense, physical fitness, confidence, discipline, self-control, spirituality, etc, I encourage you to go stop by and watch a class. You will not regret it.WMC is the best deal in town price-wise. There are no contracts or long term commitments and there is free parking on the streets behind the Dojang.Thank you to Master Steve, Master Carey and everyone at the World Martial Arts Center for helping me change my life.

Flow_Amv (Luis Angel): Positive:Communication,Professionalism,Quality,ValueI started about 3 months ago and it has helped me a lot. I do Taekwondo and after almost 2 months of training my legs got bigger. I was surprised that almost all my jeans didn’t fit me 😂. The school is great, classes really do work you and instructors are understanding.

Chris Salscheider: This is the best martial arts school ever anyone who says otherwise is not human

Kingabdi Jansb: Positive:Communication,Professionalism,Quality,Value

Coffee Cup: I stopped in because I'm new to the neighborhood. I was really impressed with the training as I watched as a guest. The owner greeted me and told me just how cheap the monthly rate was. I'm definitely planning on starting within the next month. I recommend others at least stop in.

Alex Cera: One of the best in the state.

GloriousSun250: I like this school for everything they give me from self-defense to form, but not the sparring, which is really important to me. There's no-contact point sparring and the free sparring is limiting. Otherwise this school's great!

Paul Schrater: Excellent instructors that actualize your potential. Great people, inclusive supportive and dedicated.

Rick Martinek: I took class there 1976 to 1983 and have enjoyed many of the finest instructors over those years. I'm glad to be returning next week after my Chaska branch closed down. Grandmaster Hee Sang Ro is the best in the business. Coming from Korea in 1976, Grandmaster Hee Ro took over the operation of the school and changed the name from Karate Center to World Martial Arts Center. In 2005, Mr. Patrick Carey and Steve Wankewycz joined Grandmaster Ro in the operation of the World Martial Arts Center. If you are looking for one of the best - visit this school.

Christina Super: individual attention, fantastic instructors. I have an existing back and hip issue, and they modified exercises for me! They even called when I missed 2 classes due to my hip bothering me, sounding concerned for me. I truly hope to go back and continue my training!

Aleks Till: I have been attending World Martial Arts Center since 1999. The school has the utmost concern for the well-being of students, and has a holistic and energetic approach to teaching martial arts. Its motto is: With enthusiasm and perseverance, nothing is impossible.Grandmaster Ro, who founded the school, still teaches there. It is extremely rare and is a privilege to have such an experienced martial arts instructor. This is someone who did not decide to teach taekwondo, but rather was raised to become this. His father founded one of the original taekwondo schools in Korea, and he has been training since he was a little boy. He understands anatomy, physiology, and the fosters the human potential for respect, confidence, discipline and focus. All of the other instructors at the school share an equal passion for learning and teaching. They each bring their own unique areas of expertise to the classroom, and make classes engaging and challenging. I always feel like I have more to learn, and reasons to feel good about my accomplishments so far.I never hesitate to recommend this school. If you are interested in learning martial arts from an authentic school, with instructors who are humble, knowledgeable and constantly bringing insight and new learnings to the class, then you will want to try World Martial Arts Center.

The Grappler Station: what do users think?

Linden Holt: Friendly and knowledgable community and instructors. Focused and productive classes.

Julian Kilcullen: Dropped in for Max' adult judo class while in town for work. Very high level instruction inside of a great gym with a lot of space. Curriculum is well-organized and balanced. Team is both welcoming and competitive. Very glad to have found Grappler Station and look forward to my next drop-in - highly recommend! Thank you for having me!

V К: It was great to visit Grappler Station tonight!Thank you, Sensei Max, for adult class and great judo! I truly appreciate your instructions and a warm welcome from you, your club members and another visiting joudoka. My business trip turn into exciting judo experience that I will share with my judo club in Upstate New York. I will defenetly drop in next time in Minneapolis/St Paul area!Domo Arigato,Slava K

Hannah Osman: loves Judo at the Grappler Station!

Nicole Hoffman: This was my first experience with any dojo or martial art. The grappler station was my first choice to try out Judo and BJJ. The sensis and community are beyond welcoming and educated. All sensis and other classmates are patient and uplifting. I am very pleased with choosing this dojo and look forward to many years of classes and growth in martial arts.

Lisa Johnson: The Grappler Station is AMAZING!! My son had never tried anything like this before. They welcomed him warmly, gave him clear one-on-one information about what to expect, and how the classes are run. Very organized, and a friendly, supportive community! The teachers know how to work with a variety of students successfully. As a teacher myself, I have been very impressed! We couldn't be happier and HIGHLY recommend the Grappler Station!

Laura Nicholson: Our 6.5 year old son LOVES the Grappler Station! Sensei Max has created such a welcoming environment for children to step into the world of martial arts. In the few weeks that our son has been part of the dojo, he has gained confidence and pride in all that he has learned and what he is capable of, this is a big deal for a normally shy and reserved child! Thank you Sensei Max!

Emily Spende: Great Experience at Grappler Station so far.We took advantage of the 2 week trial and recently joined as regular members. Sensei Max and his team are great at drawing my shy child in to the activities and encouraging them to participate in things that they feel unsure about. Also, the other kids in the group show great patience and leadership with new students and help and encourage them in their journey. It is a positive environment, where we look forward to watching our child grow. Thanks!

Julia Bates: This is one of the best dojos in the Twin Cities. Everyone iscwelcoming, Eagar to learn and grow, patient and skilled teachers.

Nina Porten: We love Grappler Station! Sensei Max made us feel welcomed and comfortable from the first class. Classes are really productive and everything is very well organized. My son is learning a ton! We highly recommend it!!

Morgan Phillips: Starting any sport, let alone a martial art, as an adult can be very daunting. It always feels intimidating to walk into a room full of strangers who are likely in better shape than you and start from square one. Throw all of those fears out the window at Grappler Station! From the moment you walk in the door Sensei Max will make you feel so incredibly welcome and you will quickly become part of the GS family. From my first class, I was so comfortable and any anxiety I had melted away. Yes, you will get your butt kicked in cardio. Yes, you will be sore. However, when you successfully pull off a pin or a throw for the first time it all becomes worth it. Be humble, leave your ego at the door, and bring a smile. I have never felt so welcomed anywhere and I am so happy to be a part of this wonderful community. If you're thinking about starting Judo or Jiu Jitsu, there is no better place to be!

seamus mahoney: Great place great vibe great people

Brian Rochel: We strongly recommend The Grappler Station. We have two boys, 6 and 4, who have been attending class for several weeks. We love it. Sensei Max and the rest of the crew are all wonderful with kids. They teach community values, like respect, patience, teamwork, listening, and many other important qualities. Our kids love it, it is a great balance of gross motor development with sharpening discipline and thinking skills. It is also a great community center on top of all that. We love meeting new families, kids, and dojo members. It’s fantastic. If you were curious, like we were, then do yourself a favor and check it out to see what you think!

Charlie Baez: This place rocks! I am just getting back into grappling after a twenty year hiatus. Everyone here has been nothing but super supportive and positive. The classes are tough but rewarding, and you get out what you put in. Whether you are interested in Judo, Jiu Jitsu or No Gi BJJ, this is the best spot in the Twin Cities!

Anne Hope: Sensei Max and his team are awesome. They are very welcoming and great with kids. I think they remembered our kid’s name after the first lesson and welcome him directly every time we come in. I would definitely recommend giving them a try and I bet your kids will have a great experience.

Cullen Deck: The kids love Judo thanks to the engaging Sensei Max and welcoming community at Grappler Station.

Shane Krause: Positive:Communication,Professionalism,Quality,ValueGreat Club, Students learn valuable life skills, develop confidence in a fun environment, and learn how to set and achieve goals.

Ying Jin: New to this dojo. Very welcoming atmosphere for beginners. Friendly instructors and good variety of classes and times. Would recommend to any kids/families interested in martial arts.

The Academy MN: what do users think?

Andrew Thomas: I've been going to The Academy for almost 10 years now! I would still be there but I have opened a Muay Thai/kickboxing gym in another country. This is by far the best Martial arts gym I've been too! I'm a bit biased because they have such a strong community that I was a part of. Even today being a world away, the coaches still keep in contact with me.It doesn't matter if you are going for fitness, Martial arts and/or to be a fighter. You will learn proper technique from world class coaches! They are very supportive in whatever path you choose. The biggest reason I felt it was necessary to open my own martial arts gym, was to bring this community to other people. It's not easy to recreate what the academy has. They are definitely very special. Thanks for the years of training and teachings I could not have done this without all I learned at The Academy. 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Dakotah Love: This place has changed my life, the coaches my training partners, everything good vibes, real skills, awesome fights, God only knows where I'd be without this place. Genuinely saved my life.

Karina Higareda: Dedicated, Honorable & Humble, these are my favorite words to describe this training facility. My now 16 yr old has been training at this top notch, top quality coaching studio for over a year and hands down they’ve never let us down & have impressed my son and I with their skilled training & dedicated coaching. I highly recommend & encourage people looking to level up their game to train here, you will not be disappointed. Keep up the excellent work!

Pámela Boveda Aguirre: I had the chance to train a nogi class here today, and I loved the place, the environment, the facility is super clean and confortable! you have a lot of different options in their schedule! and they have worked with many pro athletes! I had a great experience and recommend the place for sure! Also the level of the girls that train there is very good, bjj competitors with a lot of experience.

Keith Burnham: Very good training for adults and children. Coaching is talented and robust. My 16 year old son's life has been transformed in just 4 weeks at this school. He is just a beginner, but his habits and life trajectory have been impacted in an unbelievable way. More than the trophies and belts on the wall..... this experience will last a lifetime.

Sam Guinan-Nyhart: Excellent training center. Friendly, welcoming and skilled! I dropped in over the holidays and spent a great couple hours here.

Chase Taylor: Great place. Employees are very welcoming and encouraging to get people involved. Definitely a community you would like to be a part of

Andrew Vuong: Great environment and classes!

Darrick Mattox: My daughter loves it and so do we

Cella Westray: Dropped in visiting in town and looking for a place to practice. The coaches seem top-notch and extremely knowledgeable. It’s a great community they have here--not only welcoming but also somewhere to push each other to get better, which I always appreciate! Thanks again for welcoming me, I will definitely be coming back if I ever move back to the Twin Cities area!

Tanner Martinson: Top of the line facility. Not only that but top of the line coaches and training partners as well. Great environment.

Frederick Frederickson: Large multi-disciplinary training center with an equipped gym as well.

Christopher Foecke: Good variety of styles and skill levels

Isaiah Nolan: I been to gyms all over the United States for the past 10 years and the Academy is the best of the best. Super knowledgeable instructors, clean environment, and a great community of kind and accepting students.

Russell Martinez: he coaches are very knowledgeable and staff is helpful! I like how it’s a month to month membership and not long contract!

Pedro Mosquera: The best experience you have to know among all, without a doubt, knowing and belonging to this wonderful and excellent martial arts academy.A fully equipped space to develop your potential and acquire skills. The highly qualified staff with an excellent human touch make the experience even more enjoyable. With the best motto, that if you assume it as part of your life, you will be the best version of yourself every day.OPERA NON VERBA.

Steve Henry: The Academy is an extremely impressive training facility. As a 37 year old construction worker I deal will general soreness on a regular basis. After working out here for less than two months I have lost 20 pounds, eliminated what I thought was chronic hip pain, and discovered the will power to break a decade long smoking habit. The heath benefits of training martial arts are undeniable and The Academy allows you to learn from extremely legit martial artists NO MATTER YOUR SKILL OR FITNESS LEVEL. I can’t thank head coach Greg Nelson and his team enough, 10/10 would recommend.
