Jake DeWoskin: I've been taking lessons from Colin for a year now and thru his creative and adaptive teaching style my skills have steadily and quickly improved. Colin develops skill building exercises based on the type of drumming I do, and my learning style. Colin's home based drum studio is relaxed, comfortable, and perfectly suited for drum lessons. Colin is a fantastic teacher and musician.
Syan: . Drum lesson are a part of my week that I always to look forward to, so I can show what I have practiced and learn new things and how to improve. I have gone from a beginning drummer that practiced maybe 15 minutes a day and I would have to remind be reminded to where if I don’t practice for at least an hour it feels wrong and where drumming is now and integral part of my life. I can confidently play with other people and improvise, and I have learned how to learn songs on my own from learning songs with Colin over the years. Best drum teacher I have had, would definitely recommend.
Jacob Rorem: I had been wanting to learn drums for several years and finally took the plunge about 9 months ago. I simply looked for teachers near me and am lucky Colin lives nearby! Though I'm no stranger to music, I had never played a drum kit. Colin had me playing and improving in no time. He takes an individual approach with our lessons, adjusting what we're working on to what is going to work best for me at the time. He provides useful feedback, is encouraging, and clearly takes delight in teaching. As an adult learning drums for the first time, it's been a blast!

My son learned and excelled playing the drums a lot more through auditory learning than through reading sheet music at first. Through his rapid growth and interest in the drums by that learning style, he has grown his ability to read sheet music and play a variety of music genres. Colin has captivated my son as a student on the drums and has created a really good drummer within a years time. Colin continues to hold my sons engagement by teaching him new skills and beats but by also letting him navigate the songs and musical genres that interest him. Colin's acknowledgement and acceptance of her neurodiversity along with his flexibility around how she learns has been great for her. Every lesson she leaves with a smile and confidence, his ability to find the 'just right' challenge for her is one that is greatly appreciated and I think part of what makes him great instructor.
Pierre Carrier: Colin is a great drummer and great teacher. I've started from scratch to learn the drum and can now play nice famous patterns. He knows how to break down the patterns so that we can play them incrementally, from easy to more advanced songs.

If you're shopping around for drum lessons, just stop looking, because this is probably what you're looking for.

He's so patient and really tells it like it is. He is amazingly understanding and relates to my drum struggles. Talks encouraging and let's me know when I did good and corrects me when I do something not right, but his corrections are delivered fairly and kindly and he often gives examples of his past struggles, which really makes him a very personable teacher. Then there's his studio...His studio is awesome! No sitting in a closet room at a music store here. He's got two kits setup, one for the student one for himself. He's interaction with the student by playing along with them has serious benefit for the student. I've played now for going on three years, in the last six months I've gone from bored and feeling like I'm not getting anywhere to wanting lessons twice a week and playing/practicing with excitement not dread. Overall, I can't say enough good and I can't wait for my next lesson! Thank You Colin, TONSFor personal reason I had to quit taking lessons from Colin. I've tried at least 6 different teacher since I had to quit with Colin and I can without a signal doubt say that Colin is the BEST drum teacher in the Saint Paul Minneapolis area not to mention the area in Wisconsin I live in. If you are trying to make a call on a drum teacher do not hesitate, pick Colin. You will not be disappointed at all. He is the best period.
Linda Crawford: I am very happy to have selected Colin as my drum teacher. He is patient and explains concepts clearly. I find that he provides helpful feedback identifying both what I am doing correctly and where I need to make corrections. He adjusts the lessons to my progress, so I feel that I am receiving individualized instruction. I am a long time educator and know good instruction when I see it, and I see it in him! I am 71 and started drums in my late 60s. I tell all my friends about what a great teacher he is.

Henry Vlietstra: Thanks to Todd Trainer's instruction I've gone from clueless behind the kit to a confident and capable drummer. He doesn't just teach technical skill, he gives you the tools to explore and develop your own taste and style in playing the drums. I leave each lesson inspired and motivated to create. My daughter was 7 when she started learning the drums with Mr. Martin over a year ago, and we are looking forward to her playing Gold Lion by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs for her first recital. Dan Koch: My son has made great progress with learning piano. He loves his lessons, his teacher, and this school. They have been incredibly flexible when our crazy schedule has made things difficult and the people who work here are so friendly. I strongly recommend Minnesota School of Music to anyone looking for lessons.
