Welcome to Minneapolis Pioneers and Soldier Memorial Cemetery (formerly known as Layman’s), the oldest existing cemetery in Minneapolis. Since the first burial in 1853 the cemetery has been the final resting place of those who helped shape the history of early Minneapolis. Several prominent territorial pioneers, including Charles Christmas, Edwin Hedderly, and Philander Prescott are buried here. Approximately 200 military veterans who fought in wars ranging from the War of 1812 to World War I are buried in the cemetery. It is the burial site for many of the city’s early African-American residents and for many people who had ties to the abolitionist movement in Minnesota. Several thousand immigrants, primarily from Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, are buried here, as are many of their children. Over half of the cemetery’s 20,000 residents are children.
On June 2, 2002, Minneapolis Pioneers and Soldiers Memorial Cemetery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places—one of the few cemeteries that has that honor. It received its historic designation for two primary reasons: The cemetery has several distinctive architectural features including the caretaker’s cottage which dates from about 1871. Other decorative structures, such as the flag pole, the fence and gates, and monuments to territorial women and military veterans date from the 1920’s and 30’s. The second reason is the significance of the contributions of those buried in the cemetery to the social history of Minneapolis.

Selena Lindstrom: Beautiful spacious grounds with many large old trees. Abundant wildlife including deer, turkeys, raptors, songbirds, waterfowl, squirrels, racoons, herons and more. Lots of unique grave markers, including somber old tombstones that go back as far as the mid-1800s. The chapel is incredibly beautiful, a little known local gem. The mosaics inside were created by the last generation of old school mosaic master craftspeople, and are on par with the stunning mosaics in the chapels of Europe. The inside of the chapel is a must-see for anyone who appreciates architecture and artistic creations of tremendous beauty

Ali Dal: I dont know how you can review a cemetery. No one wants to go there. But we feel at peace visiting our loved ones who have passed. The grounds are very well kept and the employees are incredibly kind during a difficult time. The directory on where to find your loved ones grave is also very helpful
Audra Kramer: Beautiful cemetery in Minneapolis. So much history to be found in this bucolic setting. The online map gives a historical guide that goes along with the region of the cemetery that you are driving through. This is an active cemetery and people are still honoring their loved ones by visiting this location. The cemetery is perfectly maintained.

Scott Berglund: This cemetery is very clean and well taken care of.I know a couple of people that are buried here, and every time I come here you can tell that they work hard at keeping this place looking nice and clean.The grounds are taken care of very well, and you can always read the stones without any problem as well.

From the instructions on what to expect the day of, to the gentleman who met the procession to walk us through exactly what to do and where to go, it was so well organized. Emily Schafer: My nana is buried here and I think they do a very good job. The lawn is always maintained. We do some cleaning at her site in the winter, like brushing the snow off but that is to be expected. The Christmas wreaths this year looked wonderful and at a fair price.

Logan Thompson: Everyone here was extremely friendly and helpful. I called over the phone and requested burial locations for several family members. Even when I showed up on Memorial Day weekend, they were more than ready to help by pointing out the plots on a map. Additionally, they knew I would have trouble locating a particular grave due to its age. So they put me in contact with the grounds crew, who not only took me right to it, but uncovered the infant's plot number with a shovel! Definitely more service than expected, and a well-kept cemetery to boot.

Tirzah McPherson-Lewis: I haven't talked with staff in a while but the grounds are very nice. They keep the grass cut low have special days for various remembrances and it ia always peaceful. It is quite a bwautifulnresting place. I have 4 family members buried there. Oh, if in your cultural tradition you want to see the casket covered before leaving tell them right away so they are preared with workers and shovels otherwise the dirt is filled in with a backhoe. It may entail extra labor costs... FYI.

The biggest complaint I have is the personalized plaques DO NOT COME ATTACHED. So you had better hope you have a good eye and a steady hand unlike me and it got put on ever so slightly un level and the adhesive is so strong if I tried to move it it would just break the plaque. I would have paid more money for it to come affixed.
