Judy Retterath Withdrawal Management Center (formerly Mission Detox Center), founded in 1978, provides detoxification and clinically managed withdrawal management services to adults and adolescents ages 13 and older who are intoxicated or in withdrawal due to consumption of alcohol or other drugs. The primary goal is to provide a safe environment to facilitate uncomplicated detoxification and withdrawal, and assessment and referral in a timely and cost-effective manner. Services include:

Admission to Withdrawal Management is frequently the first professional intervention in a destructive pattern of chemical use, and a difficult point in any chemically dependent person’s journey. Each client is welcomed with respect and provided professional and compassionate care by the staff of nurses, counselors and trained technicians.


Access to Withdrawal Management by Hennepin County residents is generally on a first come first serve basis. Retterath Center also admits clients from Anoka, Carver, Scott, Chisago, and other counties. Please call for more specific information.

The Meredith Hart House is a supportive housing program designed for women, trans and nonbinary people in recovery from chemical dependency. Located in St. Paul and founded in 2001, Hart House offers a self-directed program tailored to meet each woman’s needs. The average length of stay is five months but ranges from a few weeks, to up to a year or longer. Hart House provides a wide range of services including goal planning, counseling, information and referral, weekly groups and recreational activities, and advocacy with social service systems.

Women come to Hart House by many different paths, arriving from treatment centers, hospitals, shelters or tenuous housing situations. Hart House is funded through state Housing Support per-diems (formerly Group Residential Housing), and there are some eligibility requirements for admission. Prospective residents will need to get a Professional Statement of Need completed by a qualified professional such as a treatment director, an alcohol and drug counselor supervisor, a licensed alcohol and drug counselor (LADC), or licensed physician.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) - such as methadone, buprenorphine or Suboxone to address withdrawal symptoms and cravings

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), in combination with counseling, is the most effective program to recover from opioid dependence as it treats a person’s physiological as well as psychological components of addiction. This approach addresses both legal and illicit opioids such as codeine, morphine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, hydromorphone, propoxyphene, heroin and fentanyl.

One of the strong advantages of MAT is that the individual learns to recover and heal without the requirement to leave work, family or social obligations. The added benefit of participating in treatment while continuing regular life activities is that the patient learns to work within their present circumstances. By contrast, patients that are removed from their environment for treatment must still learn how to cope and properly respond to stimuli associated with past behavior. MAT is a low-cost option when compared to the high cost of continued illegal drug use, inpatient or residential treatment, or the high relapse rates associated with programs that do not work for the individual.

Methadone is a medication used as part of a comprehensive Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) program. Methadone is an FDA-approved, highly studied and regulated medication used to help individuals recover from opioid addiction. Decades of research shows methadone to be highly effective in treating patients by stopping withdrawal symptoms and cravings.

Methadone acts as a stabilizer in the body rather than as an opioid drug that is used for its euphoric effects. When taken as prescribed, methadone helps patients function physically, emotionally and intellectually without impairment. Methadone does not produce mood swings, drowsiness or narcotic effects. By contrast, painkillers and heroin destabilize individuals and lead them to many risk behaviors that have severe consequences.

Approved for clinical use since 2002, both buprenorphine and Suboxone are medications used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes counseling and participation in social support programs. At the appropriate levels, both buprenorphine and Suboxone are safe and effective. Both have several benefits including lowering the potential for misuse, and suppressing opioid withdrawal and craving symptoms. Studies indicate that buprenorphine is equally as effective as lower doses of methadone, however, it is not as effective for patients with higher levels of physical dependency where methadone is a better option to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

Counseling is the key to achieving long-lasting success. It helps patients understand the nature of addiction as a disease, the effects of the disease on the brain and their behaviors. Through counseling, individuals explore why they became addicted, what triggers are associated with addiction and ways to establish resilient plans that will make improvements across all areas of their lives.

Hazelden Betty Ford clinicians address substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders, such as anxiety and depression, at the same time in our specialized residential treatment program. This comprehensive approach to treating co-occurring disorders (also known as dual diagnosis) provides integrated care that offers our patients the best opportunity for lasting recovery.

Our specialized programs and services for adolescents, teens and young adults include:

Adolescents, teens and young adults in our inpatient drug rehab program live on site in gender-informed residential units and follow a full daily schedule of treatment activities. Each patient has an individualized treatment plan developed by their care team, which consists of addiction counselors, mental health professionals and medical professionals. The care team continually assesses the patient's progress based on clinical and behavioral milestones and develops post-treatment recommendations to support ongoing recovery and well-being.

Our addiction rehab center in Plymouth offers specialized addiction treatment for opioid use disorder. Known Comprehensive Opioid Response with the Twelve Steps (COR-12), the program is designed to ease the discomfort of opioid withdrawal, reduce cravings and help patients engage more successfully in substance abuse treatment.

This targeted approach incorporates individual and group therapy, lectures and medication-assisted treatment, as clinically advised. Hazelden Betty Ford experts developed COR-12 to help patients achieve stable, Twelve Step-based recovery and, ultimately, freedom from drug use.

The program has a proven track record of keeping patients engaged in recovery activities and support over a longer duration—allowing for the extra time needed to regain health and hope, learn essential coping skills, and form connections that support lasting sobriety.

Outpatient substance abuse programming at our treatment center for teens and young adults is individually focused and paced to meet the needs of each patient. As patients reach clinical and behavioral milestones, outpatient sessions are reduced.

Our high-intensity outpatient program—known as day treatment or partial hospitalization—includes the same core components as inpatient treatment. Patients can pair high-intensity outpatient programming with our sober-living option, residing with peers on campus in our safe and supportive recovery community.

Intensive outpatient treatment (IOP)—available both virtually and in person—provides special-focus programming for adolescents, teenagers and young adults. To start, most patients participate in IOP four days a week for three hours a day. As clinical milestones are met, treatment sessions are scheduled less frequently. For patients in need of mental health services, we coordinate individual, group and family therapy sessions.

Hazelden Betty Ford's mental health assessments and counseling sessions are available on an outpatient basis to the general public (individuals 12 years of age and older).
