The first day of the seventh month (Tishri) of the biblical year - Yom Teruah (the day of blasting the ram's horn) or Rosh-ha- Shanah (the crown of the year) - is a feast that begins the annual cycle of Jewish feasts. Tishri (30 days within our September and October) is the seventh month from Nissan (30 days within our March and April). The religious significance of this time of year eventually aligned for Christians in the Eastern Roman and the Byzantine Empire with the periodic assessment of taxes (indications). In any event, for Orthodox Christians, from some time in the fifth century, September 1 has become the official Church New Year. Ours is a fixed date; for Jews it is a movable date (this year September 15 - 17).

Our liturgical texts for the Church New Year take up the Big Themes of the Old Testament and make the Christian claim: God is the Creator of all things and His Creation as an amazing, ordered, complex yet stable thing, embraced by His providential care and also the profound human responsibility for maintaining Creation, being its good stewards, concerned for its care, and making atonement for our failure. How Christians understand this is that God creates all things by His Word - that is His Son - and sustains by His Spirit, and when because of the Fall - for which we are responsible - and consequent devastation - Creation is broken, its harmony and coherence destroyed - He Himself heals it through the saving, atoning, restorative, perfective work of His incarnate Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

That, in short, is the Good News: that God in Christ has reconciled, renewed, restored and perfected His Creation, out of love, and that we - as part of Creation - are reconciled, renewed, restored and perfected in Him, through love.

Tri-Personal Nature, unapproachable, eternal, uncreated, Lord, God of gods, almighty Creator of all: we all prostrate before Thee and beg, "In Thy goodness, bless the present year and keep our rulers and all Thy people in peace, O compassionate Lord!"
