The Academy MN: what do users think?

Andrew Thomas: I've been going to The Academy for almost 10 years now! I would still be there but I have opened a Muay Thai/kickboxing gym in another country. This is by far the best Martial arts gym I've been too! I'm a bit biased because they have such a strong community that I was a part of. Even today being a world away, the coaches still keep in contact with me.It doesn't matter if you are going for fitness, Martial arts and/or to be a fighter. You will learn proper technique from world class coaches! They are very supportive in whatever path you choose. The biggest reason I felt it was necessary to open my own martial arts gym, was to bring this community to other people. It's not easy to recreate what the academy has. They are definitely very special. Thanks for the years of training and teachings I could not have done this without all I learned at The Academy. 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Dakotah Love: This place has changed my life, the coaches my training partners, everything good vibes, real skills, awesome fights, God only knows where I'd be without this place. Genuinely saved my life.

Karina Higareda: Dedicated, Honorable & Humble, these are my favorite words to describe this training facility. My now 16 yr old has been training at this top notch, top quality coaching studio for over a year and hands down they’ve never let us down & have impressed my son and I with their skilled training & dedicated coaching. I highly recommend & encourage people looking to level up their game to train here, you will not be disappointed. Keep up the excellent work!

Pámela Boveda Aguirre: I had the chance to train a nogi class here today, and I loved the place, the environment, the facility is super clean and confortable! you have a lot of different options in their schedule! and they have worked with many pro athletes! I had a great experience and recommend the place for sure! Also the level of the girls that train there is very good, bjj competitors with a lot of experience.

Keith Burnham: Very good training for adults and children. Coaching is talented and robust. My 16 year old son's life has been transformed in just 4 weeks at this school. He is just a beginner, but his habits and life trajectory have been impacted in an unbelievable way. More than the trophies and belts on the wall..... this experience will last a lifetime.

Sam Guinan-Nyhart: Excellent training center. Friendly, welcoming and skilled! I dropped in over the holidays and spent a great couple hours here.

Chase Taylor: Great place. Employees are very welcoming and encouraging to get people involved. Definitely a community you would like to be a part of

Andrew Vuong: Great environment and classes!

Darrick Mattox: My daughter loves it and so do we

Cella Westray: Dropped in visiting in town and looking for a place to practice. The coaches seem top-notch and extremely knowledgeable. It’s a great community they have here--not only welcoming but also somewhere to push each other to get better, which I always appreciate! Thanks again for welcoming me, I will definitely be coming back if I ever move back to the Twin Cities area!

Tanner Martinson: Top of the line facility. Not only that but top of the line coaches and training partners as well. Great environment.

Frederick Frederickson: Large multi-disciplinary training center with an equipped gym as well.

Christopher Foecke: Good variety of styles and skill levels

Isaiah Nolan: I been to gyms all over the United States for the past 10 years and the Academy is the best of the best. Super knowledgeable instructors, clean environment, and a great community of kind and accepting students.

Russell Martinez: he coaches are very knowledgeable and staff is helpful! I like how it’s a month to month membership and not long contract!

Pedro Mosquera: The best experience you have to know among all, without a doubt, knowing and belonging to this wonderful and excellent martial arts academy.A fully equipped space to develop your potential and acquire skills. The highly qualified staff with an excellent human touch make the experience even more enjoyable. With the best motto, that if you assume it as part of your life, you will be the best version of yourself every day.OPERA NON VERBA.

Steve Henry: The Academy is an extremely impressive training facility. As a 37 year old construction worker I deal will general soreness on a regular basis. After working out here for less than two months I have lost 20 pounds, eliminated what I thought was chronic hip pain, and discovered the will power to break a decade long smoking habit. The heath benefits of training martial arts are undeniable and The Academy allows you to learn from extremely legit martial artists NO MATTER YOUR SKILL OR FITNESS LEVEL. I can’t thank head coach Greg Nelson and his team enough, 10/10 would recommend.

The Cellar Gym: what do users think?

Nathan Johnson:

Suki Moen:

Gabriela Cole:

Kailey Everett: This has been my second home for the last several years! If you are having doubts just give it a try! We have all been there and it takes a lot of courage to try something new but it is so worth it! I started just because I wanted to find a way to exercise that was less boring than running on a treadmill and now, I am a part of the fight team and have rooted myself in an amazing community that has helped me not just physically but socially and emotionally. The coaches are amazing and willing to go out of their way and sacrifice their time to help you. They have a great kids program with amazing caring coaches. I don't know what I could do without this gym. Whether you want to join for mental or physical health reasons or compete at the highest level this is the gym for you!

Ken Tran: Recently, I completed the 6 week challenge, which gave me the motivation to come back and start attending classes again. For the challenge we were to attend kickboxing classes 3 times a week. Originally I was signed up for Muay Thai, as I found it to be an interesting art, but after the challenge, I found I enjoyed the kickboxing a lot and signed up for that instead.I was worried about finding time to attend, but they have so many classes on their schedule that I can always find a class that matches my schedule, no matter how much my schedule changes week to week. While I worked the fair, I was able to attend morning classes. When I went back to my normal work schedule they had a class almost every night of the week. The coaches are absolutely phenomenal. Being that there are so many classes, there are also a few coaches, and they all teach their classes differently, while still changing it up from class to class. Not only are you getting a satisfying workout, but you are getting a variety that promises you'll never get bored. As for the people, they are all very friendly. Although I attend classes alone, there is always somebody to practice with. Often we end up pairing up, and if you didn't bring a friend you'll have to make a new friend. I have not had one bad experience with all of the people I have worked with. As great as a place is, if the people aren't friendly, then it basically becomes a chore to attend. I actually find myself looking forward to attending classes and meeting new people.Overall, I would highly recommend taking a look at this gym. The classes are great and flexible; the coaches are knowledgeable and helpful; and the people are extremely friendly.UPDATE 9/4/19-11 months later and I still find myself getting excited to attend classes everyday. In fact, sometimes I dread holidays or vacations due to the classes I'd have to miss. I've started many hobbies and quit after a month or two because I was bored or just didn't feel like I belonged. Here I feel like everyone is so inclusive and welcoming.I've expanded from kickboxing and Muay Thai into Brazillian Jiu Jitsu and am loving it just as much as the other two. Unfortunately, this does mean I do have to cut back on one of the other two in order to participate, but that's what I get for wanting to try everything. One important thing to note is that The Cellar is not just for the combatants looking to get into the or improve their fighting prowess. Yes, if that is what you're looking for, this place is amazing, but for an average Joe, Jill or whoever, this is a good place to meet new friends and get in a fun workout.Update 1/10/2024-5 years later and still going! The gym has gone through some changes.- There is a new location in a much easier location within the Rosedale Commons. The space is much larger and gives us a ton of room to play in.- The new owners aren't new to the gym and have been part of the infrastructure for longer than I have been a member. They are doing an amazing job and have adapted to the post COVID world with some welcome changes- We have new coaches in the mix with the ones we have before and that has provided even more opportunity for all of us to learn and grow.I have been sticking to the "Average Joe" aspect of training. Although I have gone back to Muay Thai only, I am continuing to have a ton of fun while staying active. I still get to meet new people from all walks of life and learn from some of the most amazing people. I cannot recommend this gym enough.

Justin Anderson: I wanted to train Muay Thai for a while. I have completed my first five classes. The gym facility is exceptional. The classes are what I wanted: challenging! The coaches/trainers keep the class moving, are helpful and clear in their instructions. I did an initial trial membership which helped me determine if The Cellar would be a good fit. I appreciate there are a lot of different classes available at different times.

Peyton Krause: Nice people and awesome gym!

Joshua Hoekstra: First week here was amazing! Everyone is super friendly and made getting into something new very welcoming.

Aaron Sanders: Great gym , great people ,great experience couldn't recommend it enough! And wouldn't recommend something else.

lucio clasher: , and a great learning environment for anyone from beginner to pro. All the members ive talked to have been very nice and welcoming.

MN gooner: Phenomenal gym in every way! The instructors are kind and welcoming, and are very interested and invested in your progress. I've been rolling at this gym for about a month, and I can say that the vibe is great and overall it's an awesome training atmosphere. It can be very nerve-wracking stepping into the gym for the first time, but for anyone who's considering starting BJJ this is the place you want to be.EDIT: Still here two years later, rolling three times per week. Nothing has changed. Instructors still care greatly about your progress, and I've made close friends with many of my training partners. The best BJJ in the east metro, hands down.

Caleb McGuire: I've really enjoyed my first two months of going to the Intro Ju Jitsu classes! I've been going 3x a week, and It has been a very welcoming experience for someone with little to no experience in Martial Arts. The instructors/higher level students are always willing to answer questions and they take a very active role in the teaching through the entire class. I'd definitely recommend people going to a trial class even if you're nervous about trying something new!

Gavin Golle: 10/10 recommend. Super friendly and everyone is willing to teach you. Highly recommend for beginners looking to get into the sport.

Adil Pickle: I started the Muay Thai about 2 weeks ago and recently the Jiu Jitsu and it is great for people of any age to get into and learn how to fight or to burn fat. The instructors are very nice and always make sure nobody gets hurt.

Pearl Sellars: I LOVE IT! I started the adult class Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai. I'm still a minor so it was a little intimidating at first. The instructors there were all so patient and gave amazing advice. I recommend that you try Next Level Combat. It's worth it.

Jim Auld: Chris McCune is a brilliant Jiujitsu instructor and a really nice human being. I am a 1st degree black belt with 16 years in, Chris gave me some concepts and ways to improve that will take a couple years to incorporate into my game. A real gentleman who was there 30 years ago with the Machados. It’s hard to find true masters, but I’m here to say Chris McCune is a master of jiujitsu. Respect!

In the little time I've been there he's already made tweaks to how he runs his classes in an effort to improve the learning experience. He seems to constantly be looking for ways to do better and it shows. Not only are the instructors great, so is the community they've been able to foster. There's a real culture in the gym of everyone being welcoming and helpful. There's no shortage of people looking out for you to help you improve. I can say that head coach, Brandon, takes the art of teaching more seriously than any instructor I've ever trained with. He is sincerely dedicated to the improvement of all the students in this gym. Drink water before hand. It's a weekly payment. No contract too! Competitive, but you can't beat the flexibility in the schedule! I'd doing Ju Jitsu. Can't wait to see you

Heather Brunell: I started about 7 months ago, I fell in love the first day. Coaches are knowledgeable and supportive. The training partners are amazing. Nestor Arguello: They have a gift for meeting you at your level and helping you to improve with each class. Every coach is skilled and patient. Variety of class times is very helpful. Highly recommend.

Cecilia Earls: I have trained BJJ all over and this gym stands out as one of the best. The head instructor, Brandon, employs a teaching style that allows for extremely fast progress. I have met students here who have only trained for a few months that are better than students at other schools who have trained over a year. It is also an extremely clean facility and the members are great training partners and friends. I highly recommend this school for both beginners and those much further along in their BJJ journey!

Firaol Degefa: This is an exceptional community and environment, whether you're new to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or have been practicing for a while. I highly recommend this place; everyone is incredibly supportive and kind, always ready to assist you.

Zach Pieper: A 5-star rating for a 5-star Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy.

ChueKongPheng Xiong: People here are nice and patient for you to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Jay Huh: Trained here for a couple days while in town. Clean and large facility, and tough but friendly rolls were had. Thanks Brandon!

Felt safe with everyone and had an opportunity to train with some of the colored belts. Very respectful and overall great people. Highly recommend if you’re in the area and looking to drop in for a class.

Nicole Santolalla: Southside is an outstanding bjj academy. Everyone is very welcoming and Coaches are extremley knowledgable and focus on helping each student with their individual needs. The professors meet the students where they are at and have real grasp on how to teach the techniques for the students. I’ve practiced a variety of martial arts at a few places, their approach to jujitsu seems to be pretty progressive and very well thought out

Eben gardner: Great gym! He's very flexible with what you need and everyone is very friendly. There's a wide range of skill at this gym so it's a great place for anyone looking to continue or start their training. If you can't afford the rates, talk to him about it. He'll work with ya! Good luck!

seth cheney: I visited this school from out of town and felt right at home. Excellent instruction with fine tuned technique. Great rolling partners kept it competitive while leaving ego at the door!

Mark Hill: I did a drop in class while in town for a day at this gym. The instructor was welcoming, as were the students. He clearly has immense knowledge of Bjj and taught really well and I learned a lot from his class and his students who were equally helpful! Will be back for sure next time I am in Minneapolis. Great gym.

Kareem Abou-Karam: What an amazing place to train! It doesn't matter if you are just starting or you have been training for years, the instruction at Southside is top-notch! I have been training here for the past 2 years and have learned more than I could have possibly imagined in that time!

Fatima A: This is an excellent Jiu jitsu gym, I highly recommend it to other parents. My son attended and received stellar training. He was new to the sport and timid, and I always felt he was in the best of hands, both cared for and always challenged to get even better. The instructors are skilled, patient, and provide the kids with plenty of opportunity to learn and practice together. The membership is very competitive and location is convenient. We had nothing but great experiences here, no reservations at all.

Ibsa Barisa: Joining Southside Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy has been a transformative experience for me. Professor Enrique, the head instructor, is not only an outstanding tactician but also a highly skilled. His passion for the art is contagious, and under his watchful eye, I have learned the importance of perfecting my techniques and embracing the values of discipline, resilience, and respect. What sets Professor Enrique apart is his ability to break down complex moves into digestible steps tailored to each student's level. He has always been open to my questions and provides detailed responses that have deepened my understanding of Jiu-Jitsu. His unwavering commitment to my progress has made me feel competent in my skills and confident in my ability to apply them during rolls and future competitions. In addition to Professor Enrique, other instructors, like Professor Adrian Ricci, and higher belt students like Nik and Tim have been incredibly helpful and encouraging. Their collective expertise creates a well-rounded learning experience that fosters growth and development. The gym itself is clean and well-maintained, and I've found a supportive and motivated community in my fellow practitioners. Southside Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy flexible scheduling with classes in the morning, midday, and evenings, has made it easy for me to fit training into my busy life. I can't imagine a better environment to learn and grow in the art of Jiu-Jitsu, and I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to train under Professor Enrique and the rest of the talented team.

Joe & Dorota Kearney: I dropped in for a class while I was in town for work. It’s a great atmosphere with high level black belt instruction, and everyone was very welcoming and friendly. I will certainly return when I’m back in town!
